Water Heater Maintenance - Why You Need It

When was the last time you had a plumber out to service your water heater?  Like most people, you probably never gave it a thought.  Most water heaters can last for a decade without ever having regular service done on them.  But is that healthy for your water or your pocket book?  The last time you had service done on your water heater was probably because there was an issue.  No water?  No hot water?  Since most households cannot do without either, it usually prompts an emergency call to a plumber which can hit the pocket book hard, especially when the water heater usually has issues at the most inconvenient times like weekends and holidays.  But what if it was possible to prevent most issues from springing up?  Just like your furnace, your water heater needs regular maintenance too.  Over time, sediment can build up in your tank and this can cause several issues.  In a gas water heater, the sediments can create hot spots that can damage the tank which can lead to premature failure of the tank.  In an electric water heater, this sediment can damage the lower heater element which will effect your water temperature and your water heater efficiency.   If your water heater is not drained regularly, too much sediment can then clog the drain valve when you do go to drain it.  Now you have sediment and a leaky drain valve.  Regular maintenance of your water heater can help prevent an excess build-up of sediment which will also prevent premature failure of your water heater and keep your water heater performing and it's maximum efficiency.  Water in your water heater can also grow bacteria.  Ever get a rotten egg smell in your water?  That could be caused from bacteria growing in your water.  YUK!  Regular maintenance can help prevent this too.  Although it is possible to drain your water heater on your own, we do suggest calling a licensed plumber, especially if you have not done it before.  Redside Plumbing, LLC can come out at not only service your water heater, but we can also do a Home Plumbing Wellness Check.  We will service and do a safety inspection on your water heater and inspect all faucets, toilets and drains in your house to make sure they are all working properly.  We will also locate and tag all of the shut-offs in your house, making emergency shut-offs of your plumbing system easier.
